Solving for Pattern

Colophon

How this site is made.

A short accounting of the materials, since a practice that argues about placed knowledge and honest measurement should be willing to show its own workings.

Typefaces

Set in Source Serif 4 and Source Sans 3 by Adobe, and IBM Plex Mono by IBM. All three are released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1; the license text ships with the fonts.

They are served from this domain rather than a font CDN. That removes a third party from the record of who read what here, and removes a dependency on someone else's uptime.

Photography

Landscape photographs are of places in the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes: Lighthouse Beach in Evanston, the Indiana Dunes, Sleeping Bear and Pictured Rocks in Michigan, Horicon Marsh in Wisconsin, Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in Iowa, the Upper Mississippi River, and restored oak savanna and tallgrass prairie.

[Attributions to be completed. Where an image is not my own, the photographer and license will be named here.]

Build

Static HTML, one stylesheet, two small scripts, no framework and no build-time JavaScript in the page. Diagrams are hand-drawn SVG. The design system is tokenised, and the tokens are the source of truth for colour, type, and spacing.

Targeted at WCAG 2.2 AA. If you hit something that does not meet it, I would like to know: ryan@solvingforpattern.xyz.

Lineage

Named for Wendell Berry's essay "Solving for Pattern," first published in Rodale's The New Farm and collected as chapter nine of The Gift of Good Land: Further Essays Cultural & Agricultural (North Point Press, 1981; reissued by Counterpoint).
